Six Tips for Boosting Your Metabolism and Burning Fat

A healthy metabolism is necessary for anyone trying to lose weight. Unfortunately, there are several things that people do that actually slow down their metabolism. Some of these things include not eating enough, an inconsistent eating schedule, and even taking certain medications. However, there are several things that you can do to rev up your metabolism and begin burning more fat immediately.

1. Make sure you are getting enough quality sleep.

Between seven and eight hours is the optimal amount of time that you should be sleeping. Research has shown that not getting enough sleep not only slows down the metabolism, but also affects the body’s ability to metabolize glucose. In addition, not getting enough sleep causes an increase in a hormone called ghrelin. This hormone actually increases your appetite.

2. Incorporate interval training into your exercise routine.

Interval training simply means alternating between high intensity and low intensity exercise during your workout. An example of this would be alternating between running on a treadmill at 6 miles per hour for 1 minute, and walking at 3 miles per hour for one minute. Studies have found that varying your exercise intensity increases your metabolism not only while you are working out, but also throughout the day.

3. Increase your water intake.

Drinking only seventeen ounces of water can increase your metabolism by approximately thirty percent. The reason is because after you drink the water, your body has to work to heat your body back up. To boost your metabolism even more, add ice to your water. This will force your body to work even harder to restore a normal internal body temperature.

4. Eat more often.

Some people make the mistake of eating a few large meals each day. However, eating several small meals throughout the day actually keeps your metabolism revved up. This forces your body to burn more calories, even when you are inactive. Some examples of the types of small meals that you could try include peanut butter and an apple, carrots and hummus, or cottage cheese and strawberries.

5. Introduce more spice into your meals.

The types of spices that you should add to your meals include ginger, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, and turmeric. These spices have been proven to raise your internal body temperature. This forces your metabolism to increase because your body has to work extra hard to bring your temperature back down to normal.

6. Add more protein to your diet.

Unlike carbohydrates or fats, your metabolism increases and your body burns more calories simply by having to digest proteins. In order to experience a boost in your metabolism, you need to make sure that proteins make up at least one third of your diet. The best sources of protein include chicken or turkey breast, cheese, fish, beans, eggs, and yogurt.

Experiencing a weight loss plateau can be extremely frustrating and discouraging. In some cases, it may be difficult to figure out why your weight loss has come to a sudden halt. However, by following these tips you can send your metabolism soaring and start burning fat and losing weight again in no time.
