“Men are from Mars; women are from Venus.” That’s the popular phrase that’s been passed around, particularly since the 90s, to explain the ‘war between the sexes.’ But did you know that there are things your boyfriend might blame you for? Here’s just eight of them:
- Your Sexual History
The Kinsey Institute have studies that show 89-91 percent of people lost their virginity around the age of 24. But if you’ve had a more adventurous past, or more sexual experience than your partner, your lover will inevitably wonder where you learned how to do what you do and specifically who taught you.
- Your Friends
It’s normal for us to take on some of the characteristics of our closest friends. The scientific term for this is called psychological mirroring. This is where the term “you are the company you keep” can bite you in the butt. If one of your best friends is a serial cheater, or very promiscuous your partner might start to become suspicious of you when you tell him you have to work late on more than one occasion. That’s why trust is so important, especially if you have some shady friends.
- Menstrual Cycle
While PMS is no dirty little secret women have to keep anymore, it isn’t nearly as severe as men think it is. In fact, according to the experts, those who suffer the worst usually have a history in their family of depression or mood disorders. Men tend to use PMS as an excuse for when they screw up, and you call them out. It can’t be they effed up, it must be you PMSing.
- The Education You Received
Education is a tricky topic for women in the dating world. Too little and you’re considered dumb with no ambition; too much and you are suddenly too intimidating for your man, and he starts to feel inadequate. He starts to see you as a threat to his ego, and your attractiveness starts to drop. This is a common complaint among women with careers.
- Your Weight
Look at the television. Ever notice how the husband can be overweight, but he’s still married to the beautiful, slim woman? And how the situation is never reversed? Men want their wives and girlfriends to be attractive even if they are not. This is usually when they start dropping hints of working out, even if they aren’t weight lifters themselves and have no intention of hitting the gym. This is something men really need to get over. Most women DO NOT look like the women on television, just like MOST men do not look like George Clooney or Idris Elba.
- Your Rougher Past
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), men will be twice as likely as women to have experimented with drugs and alcohol. But if you ever experimented with marijuana or got wasted a time or two in college, you might find your past thrown in your face in arguments. Even though you would never dream of bringing up their substance abuse.
- Your Chest
The Archives of Sexual Behavior have proven that most men prefer medium- to large-sized breasts. If you weren’t ‘graced’ with such endowments, your breast size might be something he thinks about when he contemplates your supposed “flaws.”
- The Makeup You Wear
Most men prefer women to wear makeup, but not look like they are wearing makeup. So be prepared to be subjected to their judgment if you don’t wear what they consider to be the right amount. Too much and you’ll be considered a ho; too little and you’ll be asked why you don’t want to look nice for him.
These are just the most common things that men tend to blame on women. Though not rational to us, it’s something to think about the next time you’re on a date.
