Getting a manicure or pedicure is a simple activity that improves the look of your nails. It is therefore startling to see the negativity that has developed towards this cosmetic practice over the last several years. There have been horror stories of pedicure experiments gone horribly wrong. There are stories of people who develop infections from salons, infections that haunt them for the next several years. Maybe it is not so startling to see these attitudes if you consider what some clients have been through. However, this does not indicate that good salons do not exist. They do, and you can even make everything better by playing your part in the scheme of things.
- Arrive early
When you have decided on the saloon you want to go to, make time and arrive at least a quarter of an hour early. This gives you time to check out their services and the conditions under which the salon operates. If it looks clean and spotless, then there is a chance that they keep their tools clean too. If you arrive at the precise time, you might not have the luxury of looking around. Always pay attention to the placement of tools, availability of water as well as the situation of bins.
- Does the place have a license?
Most manicure and pedicure places will have licenses hanging in open places like hallways and the entrance. If you cannot see a license, those are the first signs that trouble looms large. Apart from the business license, the technicians need to own a license that attests to their abilities as well as experience. You do not want someone with a controversial cosmetic record working on your nails.
- Explore the manicure area
When you go for the cosmetic treatment of the hands, chances are that you will find other clients working with the technicians. Observe the activities going on very closely. The specialist should clean thoroughly after they are through with each client. In addition, you will need to make sure that disinfection procedures takes place. The area should have plenty of wipes, towels and water. Ensure that they do not use wooden items more than one time.
- Take a look at the pedicure end
If the salon is clean, then the footbaths need to be too, and it is not all about swirling some water, emptying and drying. Actual cleaning needs to take place here. For example, after a client leaves, the water they used needs to go. Afterwards, the workers in the salon should clean the bath with hot, soapy water, which should stay in there for not less than ten minutes. After that, the tub will need drying.
- Tell them to leave your cuticles out
Before you get started, ask if they usually tamper with the cuticles. If they say they cut away around this area, tell them to leave yours alone. This is a sensitive part of the nail and if tampered with, it can open up chances for infections to set in.
- Consider carrying your own kit
Most nail salons will allow you to come with your own stuff. Others even allow you to leave them at the premises for the next visit. Always ensure that your tools stay in a bag of their own and label the bag. At any time, you want to use these tools, have them sterilized both before and after use.
- The relationship between nails and broken skin
Before making the choice to go for nail services, you will need to know that any exposed or injured area of the skin is vulnerable to infection. Do not shave the hair on hands and feet before you go to the nail shop.
- Guard against UV damage
Shellac manicures make you feel good. They bond with the nail to create a pleasant sensation. However, you will need to know that some appliances here use UV rays, predisposing you to cancer. Ensure that the salon uses UV free lamps instead.
Going to the nail shop does not have to be a prospect you think of with dread. If you keep yourself aware, then chances are that everything will run smoothly and your nails will stay healthy and beautiful long afterwards. by: judekim
